Phonk is a texture genre. The Memphis tapes it samples were degraded by accident; a phonk video degrades on purpose — VHS warble, grain, chromatic smear — and the difference between atmospheric and unwatchable is how deliberately those textures get applied.

How a phonk edit gets cut

Phonk loops repeat, so the edit has to decide where repetition is the point and where it needs an interruption. Long, hypnotic holds — a car rolling through sodium light, smoke hanging in a headlight beam — get broken by hard texture hits when the cowbell pattern turns over. That push-pull is the engine of the video.

The grade goes night-first: deep blacks, warm streetlight against cold neon, and enough contrast that the image survives compression on TikTok and Reels. Texture passes come last — VHS frame slips on transitions, grain that thickens in the dark parts of the frame — so the degradation feels baked in, not pasted on.

Drift phonk, Memphis phonk, and the range between

Drift phonk wants motion — cars, speed, momentum cuts. Memphis-leaning phonk wants menace — slower, smokier, closer to horror pacing than car culture. Most records sit between the two, and the reference videos you send set the balance. Either way the edit follows the track's energy, not a template.
